What Cancer is All About with Benign and Malignant Tumors

Simply stated, cancer is about normal cells gone wild.

When all goes well, cells grow and divide to produce more cells as they are needed to keep the body healthy. Sometimes, unfortunately, something goes wrong in this life sustaining process.

What goes wrong is new cells form when the body doesn’t need them and old cells don’t die when they should. These extra cells form a tissue mass commonly referred to as a growth or tumor. Thankfully, not all “gone wild” cell masses are cancerous.

Benign tumors are not cancer. These growths are rarely life threatening and do not spread to other parts of the body. Removal and forget it.

Malignant tumors are cancer. These growths are abnormal and divide without control or order. The growths may invade tissue around them causing its destruction, and in some cases enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system.

Should cancer enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system, it can spread from the original cancer site to form new tumors in another organs. This spreading of cancer is called metastasis.

That is a simply overview of what cancer is all about.
