If the edge of your toenail is red and painful you may have an ingrown toenail. This pain causing condition results from a curved toenail, poorly fitting shoes, improper toenail trimming, or a toe injury.
Essentially, what happens is that your toenail cuts into and grows into you skin. Your toenail pierced skin turns red and painfully infected. Typically, your big toe is the culprit for nail into skin growth.
For relief of your ingrown toe nail:
- soak it in warm water
- next remove the toe nail from under the skin using an ingrown toenail device
- trim your toenail
- then apply an over-the-counter antibiotic to your infected toe skin
Two things you can do to help prevent future painful episodes of an ingrown toenail is to wear properly fitting shoes and keep your toenails trimmed ~ not too short, straight across.
If you have diabetes, you may be at risk for additional complications so you should contact your health care provider.
