Skin Mole Growths, Atypical Skin Cancer Moles and Mole Removal Options

Moles are very common growths on your skin caused by melanocytes (skin cells) flourishing in a cluster. Its not unusual to have several moles located all over your beautiful body, along with new ones occasionally cropping up.

The color of moles are typically pink, tan or brown spots, and can be flat or raised. Commonly round or oval in appearance, and usually not bigger than the tip of a finger.

About 10% of mole bearers have one atypical mole, that looks different from their other moles. Atypical moles are often larger than the others, have irregular borders and uneven in color. These unusual moles are medically termed dysplastic nevi.

Atypical skin moles are the ones more prone to develop into melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Therefore, any appearance change should be checked by your physician. For example if they should:

  • grow larger
  • look unusual
  • change in color
  • outline changes

Some dysplastic nevi give additional warning signs for melanoma, such as:

  • pain
  • oozing
  • itching
  • crusting
  • swelling
  • bleeding
  • elevation
  • ulceration
  • bluish-black color

If you have any doubt, have them checked out.

The majority of your moles, and other skin blemishes, will never pose a health concern. Yet you may find them cosmetically unappealing.

Mole removal is possible and often accomplished in the doctor’s office.Mole removal techniques include:

  • punch biopsy
  • shave excision
  • excision surgery
