Black Cohosh Root for Relief of Menopause Hot Flashes and Side Effects

Study results are mixed as to whether black cohosh is effective in relieving menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes. However, one 12 week study did show a decrease in daily hot flashes by the black cohosh users.
Black cohosh’s reported side effects include headaches and stomach discomfort. In clinical trials, a low number reported:
- headaches
- weight problems
- gastric complaints
- heaviness in the legs
Black cohosh has recently been linked to a few cases of hepatitis, but it is not clear whether black cohosh caused the problem.
