What is Informed Consent Right for Medical Treatment
You are entitled to complete information about your illness and how it may affect your life, and if you want to share or withhold this information. You have the right to be fully informed about any procedures and treatments that are planned, the benefits and risks, and any alternatives that may be available.
When you are asked to sign an “informed consent” form, which includes this information, it is imperative that you read it carefully and ask your doctor any questions before signing.
Also, you have the right to make decisions about your own treatment. When faced with a life threatening disease, you may want to try every available drug or treatment, or you may choose to forgo any and all aggressive medical treatment. Your right, your decision.
You may want to turn to family, friends, or caregivers for advice, but ultimately it is your decision to make about how much or how little medical treatment you get. Sometimes you may be unable to make this decision, due to severe illness or a change in mental condition.
This is why it is important for you to make your wishes known in advance of medical treatment time.
