Pharyngitis means your pharynx is inflamed. And its inflammation causes a sore throat symptom. Your pharynx is located between your tonsils and larynx in the back of your throat.
The dominant cause of pharyngitis is a virus infection. Less common, pharyngitis throat pain is instigated by a bacteria infection. Every so often, a sore, inflamed pharynx has nothing to do with an infection.
The primary symptom of pharyngitis is a sore throat. Pharynx inflammation may be accompanied by some other symptoms, like:
- skin rashes
- severe throat pain
- swollen, red tonsils
- swallowing difficulty
- recurrent sore throat
- swollen neck lymph nodes
- white patches, pus on throat, tonsils
There are various virus infections that could cause of your pharyngitis symptoms, some are:

- parainfluenza virus
- herpes simplex virus
- respiratory syncytial virus
Viral pharyngitis can be a symptom of an upper respiratory tract infection or solely an infection in your pharynx.
Not so often, these bacterial infections can be a cause for sore throat pharyngitis:
- strep throat
- yersinia species
- neisseria gonorrhea
- chlamydia pneumonia
- mycoplasma pneumonia

Most health conditions that cause pharyngitis aren’t serious. And go away without specific treatment.
However, if your pharyngitis is caused by a bacteria, then an antibiotic may be necessary. Your health care provider is only one that should make this decision.
Some treatment remedies that can help soothe your painful sore throat:
- cold liquids
- warm liquids ~ honey, lemon tea
- OTC pain medications ~ acetaminophen
- humidifier ~ moistens dry air & painful throat
- gargle with warm salt water ~ couple time per day
- suck on ice, popsicle, hard candy, throat lozenges
NEVER give aspirin to a child for treating pain in their throat nor for any other health treatment reason.
Most often, infection caused pharyngitis occurs in colder months. And pharynx relief treatment may need to go further than just your throat.
