Lazy Eye Amblyopia, Cross Eye Strabismus Causes Vision, Depth Perception Eye Problems

Lazy eye and cross eye are two different vision problems. Strabismus is the term used for eyes that cross or wander. Amblyopia expresses lazy or reduced vision eye. Strabismus is visually noticeable, amblyopia is not.

While focusing, if your eyes point in different directions, then you have cross eye strabismus.  This misalignment sends two very different pictures to your brain.  In response, your brain will block out the image produced by the weaker eye.  This suppression of one to avoid double vision causes a loss of depth perception.

Over time, strabismus causes amblyopia in the weaker eye.   This lazy eye can cause symptoms like:

Strabismus may be constant or intermittent.  Intermittent strabismus rarely causes amblyopia.

For the most part, strabismus and amblyopia are childhood eye problems.  Occasionally, adults can acquire cross eye strabismus due to certain health conditions, such as:

Crossed eyes developing in adulthood may cause these symptoms:

Amblyopia vision problem is not an issue with adult strabismus because lazy eye occurs during brain development.

As to the treatment of strabismus and amblyopic, earlier is better. Forms of treatment include:

  • patching one eye
  • corrective glasses
  • atropine eye drops
  • eye muscle exercises

These treatments are designed to make your weak eye stronger. Sometimes surgery may be necessary to straighten an eye.

Amblyopia and strabismus do not go away on their own. And uncorrected lazy and cross eye can cause permanent vision and depth perception eye problems.
