Ischemic Optic Neuropathy Optic Nerve Damage Causes Sudden Vision Loss

There are a few eye conditions that cause sudden loss of vision.  One such cause is ischemic optic neuropathy.

Giant cell arteritis is the primary associated cause for arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy.  Whereas, hypertension, diabetes and atherosclerosis are major risk factors for the nonarteritic version.

Nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy causing sudden loss of vision sometimes occurs in concert with severe migraines, albeit rarely.

Ischemic optic neuropathy causing sudden and painless loss of vision may affect sight in one or both eyes. And it might only impair a portion of your visual field.

The permanency of your vision loss depends on the degree of optic nerve damage.  A vision episode can spontaneously improve or be a permanent vision loss.

Treatment for nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy involves controlling your blood pressure, diabetes or any other factor influencing optic nerve blood supply.  If your arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy is caused by temporal arteritis, then high doses of corticosteroids are used to treat this form of vision loss.
