Discover What Hypoallergenic Cosmetics Means for Hypersensitive Skin

Hypoallergenic cosmetics means whatever a particular company wants it to mean.

Presently, there are no Federal standards or definitions that governs the use of the term “hypoallergenic.” Manufacturers of cosmetics are not required to substantiate their hypoallergenic claims to FDA, nor anybody else for that matter.

You, as a consumers with hypersensitive skin, or perhaps “normal” skin, are led to believe that these products will be gentler on your skin. Consumers concerned about allergic reactions from cosmetics should understand that no cosmetic can guarantee never to produce an allergic reaction, one does not exist.

Years ago, some cosmetics contained harsh ingredients that had a high potential for causing adverse reactions. But these ingredients are no longer used.

The FDA knows of no scientific studies which show that “hypoallergenic” cosmetics or products making similar claims actually cause fewer adverse reactions than their competing conventional products.

The term “hypoallergenic” means considerable market value in promoting cosmetic products to consumers on a retail basis. But if you know you are allergic to a certain ingredient, then take that extra protection step and read/compare the product’s list of ingredients on their labels.

Best way to avoid your skin problems is label read your way to safe cosmetic use.
