A hiccup is an unintentional movement (spasm) of the diaphragm, the muscle at the base of the lungs. This spasm is followed by quick closure of the vocal cords, which produces that distinctive hiccup sound.
Hiccups often start for no apparent reason nor cause, and normally cease after a few minutes. But, rarely, hiccups can be stubborn and they will not stop for days, weeks, or even months.
There may be no obvious cause for hiccups, however here are some suspects:
- noxious fumes
- stroke or tumor
- abdominal surgery
- hot and spicy foods/liquids
- diseases or disorders irritating your diaphragm nerve

- hold your breath
- eat a teaspoon of sugar
- drink a glass of cold water
