Gas, Dry, Wet Gangrene Causes for Skin Discoloration and Foul Smell Symptoms for Removal Treatment
Gangrene is tissue death caused by the lack of blood flow to a part of your body. The most common areas affected by gangrene are the extremities, especially toes and fingers. For some, a bacterial infection gets involved.
Gangrene occurs because the necessary oxygen and nutrients are no longer being supplied. Without these, cells have no means for survival. Infection is also a concern because the area is not receiving immune system antibodies to fight it.
Typical symptoms for gangrened skin are:
- blue/black discoloration
- discharge with a foul smell
- initially severe pain, then numbness
Septic shock is a possibility if gangrene’s bacterial infection spreads to the rest of your body.
There are various types of gangrene, each causing their own unique symptoms, including:
- dry gangrene ~ dry, shriveled discolored skin that develops slowly and more common in those suffering from atherosclerosis
- wet gangrene ~ bacterial infection is present, causing swelling, blistering and appears wet, often occurs in when a diabetic injures a toe or foot, sometimes in severe burn, frostbite or injury situations, immediate treatment is necessary to prevent bacteria from spreading, which has possible fatal consequences
- gas gangrene ~ typically affects deep muscle tissue, usually caused by a bacteria infection that produces gaseous toxins, and this condition is life threatening
- internal gangrene ~ affects your organs, most commonly your intestines (twisted hernia), gallbladder or appendix, often causing a fever and severe pain, and can be fatal
- Fournier’s gangrene ~ uncommon type involving the genital organs, usually due to genital or urinary tract infection
Grangrene damaged tissue cannot be saved, so treatment involves removal of the dead skin, or in severe cases amputation of a toe, finger or limb. Antibiotics are used to treat any associated infections.
Your risk for gangrene development is greater if you have diabetes or atherosclerosis. Frostbitten skin can also lead to gangrene. So whenever in extremely cold temperatures, preserve the health of your fingers and toes with cover.
