Erythema is a health condition caused by capillary dilation under your skin, due to excessive blood and inflammation. This skin condition is typically marked by a red rash. And a very common cause of erythema skin redness is a sunburn.
There are different types of erythema, causing a variety of how skin redness rashes look, for instance:
Erythema red rash may be caused by:
- burns
- injury
- allergy
- exercise
- massage
- pregnancy
- solar radiation
- fungal infection
- allergic reaction
- bacterial infection
- electrical treatment
- poisoning ~ oleander
- ionizing radiation therapy
- injection sites, vaccinations
- skin irritation ~ hair waxing, plucking
Erythema is also associated with various health conditions, such as:
- lupus
- rosacea
- sarcoidosis
- fifth disease
- tuberculosis
- Lyme disease
- rheumatic fever
- Behcet disease
- Hodgkin disease, lymphoma
- inflammatory bowel diseases
Erythema may be caused by a drug allergy or side effect as well, for instance:
- NSAIDs
- heparin
- naproxen
- topiramate
- acne medication
- oral contraceptives
Depending on the cause of your erythema, the skin redness rash can be accompanied by other symptoms, like fatigue, fever, itching, headache, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
When you press on your erythema, your reddened skin rash will disappear. Whereas, other skin color changes, like purpura, petechiae, albinism, lentigo and pigmentation, maintain their color under pressure.
