Dietary Supplements: Is More Really Better for Good Health?
Today’s dietary supplements are so much more than just vitamins and minerals. Nowadays they include less familiar substances, such as:
- herbals
- enzymes
- botanicals
- amino acids
All claiming to be conducive to good health.
Currently these “instead of eating right” supplements come in a variety of forms, such as tablets, capsules, powders, energy bars, or drinks.
Are you one of those “why bother with the produce section for a wholesome way of life” attitude since the supplementation aisle is just down the way?
Wise woman says be careful ~ nature has intention.
If you do not consume a variety of foods, some supplements may help ensure that you get adequate amounts of essential nutrients for promotion of optimal health and performance. However, dietary supplements are not intended to:
- treat
- prevent
- diagnose
- mitigate
- cure diseases
Watch out for manufacturers, or your buddies, who make such claims!
Dietary supplements may have unwanted effects and as such may not be healthful. Many supplements contain active ingredients that can have strong effects in the body.
Scientific evidence supporting the benefits of some dietary supplements (e.g., vitamins and minerals) is well established for certain health conditions, but others need further study.
If you are bound and determined to supplement rather than correct your poor habits of consumption, please keep in mind that they should not replace prescribed medications. Nor be on your variety of foods list that is important to good health.
Healthy lifestyle eating still has a “produce section” requirement and nature is not effortlessly mimicked.
