Coronavirus Causes Common Cold, SARS Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
Coronaviruses are second to rhinoviruses for causing the common cold. And a strain of this virus causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, popularly known as SARS.
Severe acute respiratory syndrome can be fatal. Frequent cause is respiratory failure. However, a known transmission of SARS coronavirus infection hasn’t been noted since 2004.
Coronavirus may also cause other respiratory tract infections, such as pneumonia and pharyngitis.
Coronavirus infectious disease is contagious. Corona viruses that causes the common cold are typically only spread around during the winter and spring.
Most respiratory infections, including the common cold and SARS, are spread via droplets or airborne particles, which can linger in the air. They get in the air by means of coughing, sneezing or talking. Yet, viruses can also be spread by body fluids contaminating objects, like doorknobs, telephones and counters.
Couple ways to prevent coronavirus infection from spreading is:
- wash your hands frequently
- use 60%+ alcohol based hand sanitizers
- don’t share used silverware, towels or bedding
- wear a surgical mask while in close contact with others
- cover your mouth, nose with tissue when cough, sneeze
- avoid public places until your common cold symptoms disappear
If you’re recovering from SARS, then it’s recommended you limit your contact with others for 10 days post symptoms.
Coronavirus vaccine is available for your pet, but not for you yet.
