Is anxiety and stress causing you insomnia? Appreciating what you can and cannot control focuses your efforts in the quest to cure anxiety and stress insomnia. To begin, let’s lay out a highly simplistic meaning of anxiety, stress and insomnia.

Stress is your body’s response to a perceived threat. Anxiety is feeling attached to this response. Insomnia is routine difficulty with sleep for a period of time that causes substantial awake cycle (daytime) impairment.

Your body’s response to a threat involves a branch of your autonomic nervous system that rapidly prepares your body to take action for self preservation. Once the threat has passed, another branch of this same system calms your body back down. The mechanism for accomplishing both is through the unconscious release of hormones and neurotransmitters.

An approach to cure anxiety and stress caused insomnia is taking conscious steps that affect the release of these hormones. And the basis for all those hours of lost sleep time comes down to one thing ~ what you perceive as a threat.

The instant you perceive a threat your sympathetic nervous system initiates your fight or flight response via the release of hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. Once the threat has passed, your parasympathetic nervous system releases hormones that promote relaxation.

Although your body’s stress response may feel almost instantaneous to a threat, calming back down off the anxiety is not.

One key to curing your anxiety insomnia is addressing the threat. Removing yourself physically from an obviously threatening situation is simple enough. However, stress and anxiety can result even though you may not consciously acknowledge what is actually causing a threat.

First, direct your thoughts on the question of what is the threat. Once you figure that out, then assess whether it really is a current threat that requires your body to react to. Come to a conclusion in the negative and feel yourself start to relax. The sooner you neutralize the threat ahead of bedtime, the better your chances are for sleep as opposed to stress insomnia.
