Alternative Medicine: What is Therapy of Energy

Within the realm of alternative medicine, energy therapy treatments are becoming popular for pain management and/or relaxation. There are two types of energy fields these therapies use: veritable, which can be measured, and putative, which has yet to be measured.

The veritable energy therapies use mechanical vibrations and electromagnetic forces to treat individuals. In contrast, putative energy (biofields) therapies are based on the concept that human beings are infused with a subtle form of energy.

This vital energy is believed to flow throughout the human body. Therapists believe that they can work with this subtle energy and use it to effect changes in the physical body and influence health. Practitioners of energy medicine believe that disturbances of these subtle energies may be causing illness.

Examples of practices involving putative energy fields are:

  • Reiki and Johrei, both of Japanese origin
  • Qi gong, a Chinese practice
  • Healing touch, in which the therapist is purported to identify and correct imbalances
  • Intercessory prayer, intercedes through prayer

These energy approaches are among the most controversial ofalternative medicine practices because neither the external energy fields nor their therapeutic effects have been demonstrated convincingly. Yet, energy medicine is gaining popularity in the American marketplace.

If you are in pain and nothing seems to work, give it a shot. Nothing to lose, and everything to gain.
