Adenomyosis Causes Dysmenorrhea, Heavy Menstrual Bleeding Symptoms for Adenomyosis Treatment

Adenomyosis and endometriosis are female reproductive health conditions that involve out-of-control endometrium. But they differ as to where this abnormal growth takes place.

Endometrium is the inner layer of your uterus, which is shed during menstruation.

Adenomyosis means endometrium tissue grows into the myometrium, the muscular tissue in your uterus. This advancement is limited to the confines of the uterus, thickening your uterine wall. Adenomyosis is generally considered harmless.

Whereas, endometriosis is marked by uterine cells growing outside the uterus, invading other reproductive organs or tissue within your pelvic area.  Thus, endometriosis is more likely to cause infertility.

Some women have no idea adenomyosis is occurring because it causes no symptoms or only mild discomfort. Symptoms of adenomyosis in those that do may experience:

Prolonged, heavy menstrual bleeding may result in anemia.

The cause of adenomyosis remains unclear, but its growth depends on the circulating estrogen.  So, it usually resolves after menopause.

This dysmenorrhea and heavy menstrual bleeding causing health condition usually occurs near menopause, thus the requirement for adenomyosis treatment may be minimal. Treatments for adenomyosis are:

  • hysterectomy ~ done when pain is severe & menopause a ways off
  • hormone therapy to lessen the heavy menstrual bleeding & dysmenorrhea pain, or cause amenorrhea
  • anti-inflammatory taken a couple days ahead of & throughout menstruation to reduce menstrual bleeding & reduce dysmenorrhea pain

Sometimes adenomyosis causes an adenomyoma, a mass within your uterus.
